When we butchered chickens a few weeks ago, one of them had a liver about 5 times the normal size. The liver was yellow and filled most of the body cavity. The bird itself was much smaller than the others. Does anyone know what could have caused this? Needless to say we culled the bird. Is this sort of thing common?

i am hoping you found the enlarged liver after culling the bird

i have NEVER seen anything like that...we have processed over 300 birds this year alone. so for us it is definitely not common, but i am interested to hear what others have experienced! i'm sure someone here will be able to tell you what was up with the little guy.

Hmm, well that isn't very reassuring. We only butchered 20 chickens. We definitely killed the chicken before discovering the liver issue- but we chose not to eat the bird. Thanks for the response.
