Had a fecal sample taken for one of my girls who was acting strange and they found Entamoeba histolytica. Anyone heard of it in chickens? I know it is found in humans and causes dysentery. What about in a chicken?
Any thoughts?

Although I was not able to find anything specifically on chickens (except for studies where they were purposely infected) here is a page that might give you a bit more info.. http://www.righthealth.com/Health/Entameba Histolytica-s?lid=goog-ads-sb-8536643334 and from what else i was able to read, it is treated with an antibiotic if i read it correctly.. Hope this helps at least a little bit..

Found some more information... http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.1637/7420-081005R.1

as far as I know, this species is only in mammals- and human at that. other mammals get it from people. I would question whether the lab knew what species the sample was from, as the cyst can look like other protozoal organisms. If this was an in house test, I would ask for a sample to be sent to a reference laboratory familiar with exotic poop and parasites. Metronidazole kills amoebas, but I would get a trustable ID before medicating. I will look into this further, as I am curious!
