Tonight I watched a young peahen chase the down off Mr. White. She'd pick a piece off the fence run with it let it go then hop and jump after it till it finally fell on the ground. Back to the fence looking for another piece of down. The others totally ignored this which shocked me. I thought they'd all be in on the play with one acting so unusual. I am finding wing feathers and down after the lose of the tail. How bald do these fellows get?

Thats funny.
I love to watch them play hop and chase, makes me smile
They never molt like a chicken, instead they drop and replace a feather here and there, the train feathers drop the fastest and the most at one time period , at least that has been my observation.
My cameo hen hopped down in the dog pen with the pups i have in training and got all her tail feathers and some of her wing feathers pulled out. while she looks funny and is fine i was amazed that she could still fly and land properly without a tail feathers and only half her flight feathers.

I learned when dressing out my male that the tail feathers just pulled right out no resistance so i guess when a predator grabs one by the tail the feathers just fall out and the bird gets away

When we were moving the new hens one got all excited an Alicia grabbed her tail. I guess I should apologize to her as I thought she got to rough when she had a hand full of tail feathers. I got these birds for their beauty, but am finding that they are even more entertaining. Trying to get them to gain your trust is quite a game, too. I find the men of my family out watching them trying to get them to call and strut more than the woman and grandkids. My 33 year old son has more pictures of the peacocks on his facebook than his boy toys.

Ok I'm thinking of adding a couple of ornamental turkeys to my little zoo. They would be closer to the peacocks than the chickens. Are they compatable or should I also keep them a distance away?

I have read a few times that they can end up fighting, course the guy that buys all my hatchlings swears that my peafowl were gonna kill my chickens, so far they are still alive after 2 years, so i guess it will depend on the peas.

I would probably build them their own little pen also. Just found out my neighbor lady has had geese for years and something got them when she was nesting. Just don't understand what is different today than yester year. We had chickens and livestock when I was growing up and I never remember anything being killed.

None of my birds are penned, they come up to the barn and house to roost and nothing gets them my dogs keep things that eat my birds away and if they get caught where the birds are they never leave alive.
They dispatched 4 young possums in a week which is usuall for this time of year.

I need one of your dogs. I let my pet chickens out during the day and then I shut them up at night this fall I might try a few peas and see if they will go back to their pen and roost at night. It's such a big decision.
