Smitty's Farm :

You are lucky! I tried putting a crate on it's side w/ cushy straw to line it, but Psycho just didn't like it. She proceeded to lay in the back center of the coop on the ground in the wood shavings. I'm going to try a few other things and see if she likes them.......but her name is Psycho for a reason!

Yeah, keep trying, perhaps she likes the top open?

Haimish: How old are your pullets and what kind do you have?

Okie: Good morning! I guess I'm still half asleep, b/c I did just notice that that is a duck in the nest box. You crack me up!

Poor hen - she doesn't look amused at all!

Can you imagine the poor hen if she hatches that egg and her child then wants to swim in the water dish?

LOL! Same thing happened to us - we had one hen who would only lay on top of the nesting boxes, so we built another box there and now she lays in a box. Who trains who?

I made two beautiful boxes and put some fake eggs as well.
now my first layer is laying on the opposite side from the boxes right at the doorway. Go figure

I'M Sindoora btw!!! Haimish is my lil bro, who is officially banned from the comp due to the fact he broke his.

My chickens are:

2 9-10 month old pullets
1 7-8 month old pullet.

How do I tell if they are ready to lay?

Okie! Duck and a hen in one nesting box!!
