Sandra We have some Food grade DE, when you add it to their food or treats, is it dry or does it need to be mixed into something that has moisture?

On the pumpkin seeds, can chicks this small eath them and, do they de-worm, or just help with symptoms?

Barg, mix some DE with yogurt!! that is if you don't have the wet cat food!! I am getting me some DE just to have on hand. Sandra came through very nicely on this!!

I forgot to add that if you decide to use DE as a maintenance regime (which I personally recommend)...you can mix it 2% by weight with your feed. Not enough is almost useless so err on the generous side.

In my case, my chickens hardly ate the feed since they free ranged and that's why they get it via their treats!

Since the 2 younger chicks are going to have more and more contact with the older pullets from here out, I am convergeing ongoing posts to this thread.

Update on hazel from the beak injury thread:
Hazel still seems better then the first day and is eating and drinking, but I have noticed that the end of her beak looks a bit red again and she is doing the tongue thing again.
I'm not sure how to keep her from reinjuring it.

I am so glad to hear that Hazel is doing so much better. That first close up of her on her injured beak...her eyelashes make me jealous!! Such a pretty girl.

I hope someone jumps on here soon and tells you the amount to use as I have never used nor had it so I don't have a clue. I will be getting some though, it sounds like something to keep always if we are going to have chickens.

DE- I don't remember how much to just add to the dry feed to make the math right (since I can't do it that way). MY philosophy is better a little too much than not enough. You don't need to mix it with yogurt before putting in in treats. For example, when I give them leftovers I just mix it in. For now I have 8 chickens and I add ~ 8tsp to the treats and make sure the all get some. If it seems too dry, then I'll add a few drops of water, you don't need much. I also still put DE in the feed (just so it's all a little dusted)- it also keeps it bug free--but again, since my chickens free range, they hardly eat any at all.

Pumpkin seeds. Your girls don't seem that small and it should be fine to give it to them whole. If you're concerned, just chop them up a little. Just remember to get the UNsalted kind.

Wow and I always thought they were birds...
So for those who didnt know, Chickens are more closely related to cows and pigs then they are to parakeets and finches.
