Kathyinmo, bless her heart, sent me a wonderful selection of high quality, rich, jewel-tone, Asian inspired fabrics recently in purples, reds and golds. I've been racking my brain to find a fairly simple quilt block that would perfectly showcase those gorgeous fabrics and I think I have it. The Jewel Box block would lend itself to this project like I had acquired these fabrics with this precise block in mind. Here are some quilts I found on the web that were made with this pattern. What do you think? And tell me which background you like, the black or the lighter color of the bottom picture.

All of them look like a lot of work. (mom used to have us younguns help her quilt when I was a kid)

If I had to chose one, the first pic is breathtaking.

I like the first one too. It makes the colors pop.

I would keep the black all one material, so as not to distract from the colored material.

Beautiful !

The black makes the jewel tones look like light flowing through stained glass. Dramatic. The blues give that comfort vibe...like your favorite pair of Levi's.

I think your background choice needs to suit the use or the effect you’re planning. The black really showcases the colours of the jewels, and it will draw the eye directly to it in any room. I think it would darken any room too though, and that could be a plus or a minus.

The lighter background would lighten a room and it looks fantastic too, but would not draw the eye to it so fast or so intensely, it would still be noticed but not be a distraction to everything else in the room, it could compliment other things rather than overpower them.
