Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Looks like a nice flock, Laingcroft!

My roosters all have pros and cons too.
Eddie is dominant. Nice comb, bright yellow legs, but lots of the smutty gray color on his chest.

Zuri has great size, but white legs, and his coloring is a little on the light side.

I have two others that I am not keeping. One is mostly white, the other has great feather coloring, but is very small and skittish. Wish I could keep three, but I'm already pushing it with the two I have chosen.

Your hens are very nice! I have one solid brown, one speckled, and one very small and light colored. I can't wait until they start laying (which will be soon!).

What do you you guys think of making a list of who has EOs where? For instance, just quote the list and edit it if you want to be on it?
It could look like this..

California - ronott1; MonsterClucker;

Maine - buckabucka;

Tennesee - skylinepoultry;

Virginia - Maggiesdad; Laingcroft; Naturespace

Then the person looking could search the thread for the phrase 'who has EOs where' to find the most recent posting of the list...
Is this "who has EOs where" list for breeders or just owners?

Hi Fellow Euskal Oiloa Fans!

Been awhile since I've been on the forums. Just joined the Euskal Oiloa forum too, but it's too much hassle to post pics there. I'm getting ready to set up breeding pens now that the girls are laying well. I kept three roosters that have different qualities. The first boy is El Cid "Cid". He is huge. Pros: Fastest to mature, beautiful full body and nice feathering; cons: wrong color (very smutty, black/white barring and white legs. He is also my sweetest boy. Cid is going in my egg layer flock in hopes that his male offspring will be big like him...and suitable for the freezer. Can only have so many roos

From Skyline eggs.

The next roo is Golden Boy. I love his coloring, correct leg and beak color, nice comb, but on the light weight side. He is going in breeding pen A . From Greenfire line.

And last but not least is Mardunn the rooster I believe may be hetero for barring. He has correct yellow legs/beak and deep red barring, but there isn't as much white as Golden Boy. Nice broad breast. He also has a little bit of smuttiness (gray) on his breast feathers. His comb is also on the small side and he is later maturing than the other two. He will be in breeding pen B. From Greenfire line.

The girls are all over the place in colors too. I've found the best (butterscotch yellow barred) come from the Skyline eggs, but there are also a lot of white legs and a single all white hen came from that batch of eggs too. My only Mille came from Greenfire. She is in the layer flock.

Yellow leg butterscotch barred i.e. proper maraduna color?

White leg maradunna hen.

White leg golden (butterscotch) and a smutty red maraduna hens.

Reddish hen.

Opinions? Thoughts on who should be bred to whom?
I like Marrdunn's coloring best. Maybe you can breed him to some yellow legged girls.

I do believe the coloring you are calling butterscotch is the correct Marraduna coloring. The redder colored girls we are calling deer colored. Not correct, but I think she could throw you the correct color.

They are looking nice. keep us up to date on who you breed.

Buckabucka, depending on how many girls you have, you could keep two cockerels in the same pen. It also depends on their personalities too. If they both think they should be the most dominant then there could be a blood bath, but if one is submissive to the other, you will probably be ok. I would think you need to have at least 10-12 girls to keep two guys happy.

I have two pens. One with my preferred cockerel (Yellow) and one with my backup cockerel (Purple). I only have one Marraduna type girl and she is with Yellow. I also have 6 other girls with him. Purple has 3 large BBS Orpingtons with him. When I let them free range they seem to keep separate. No fights, but Purple is very submissive to Yellow.

Yellow and my Welsummer cockerel were fighting and I had to sell my Welsummer, because i didn't have space or girls for him.

I think that Purple is a much better cockerel for the girls. He really keeps an eye on them and is great about letting them eat the tasty things he finds. Yellow eats the tasty things without letting the girls know he found something. Actually my Welsummer cockerel was probably the best boy for the job. The girls loved him and he was a gentleman to them, but he was aggressive to us and not an EO, so he had to go.

I'm finding it really interesting having cockerels with the pullets. The flock is a much different system with them.

Thanks, naturespace, I hope you are right that they may both work out. There are 11 girls in there with the 2 roosters, only 3 Basque girls. One rooster is definitely more submissive, but the dominant roo insists on chasing him around and around.

Both seem to be good roosters, as far as not attacking us, and sharing treats with the girls and keeping a watchful eye on the sky. The next thing I need to do is give them more space. Their hoop coop is large, but I want them to get out into a larger fenced in area. I set up a temporary area with some excess chicken wire I had, but it is tiny and I need to buy something else. I'm thinking maybe snow fence. They won't be out there unless I'm home, due to dogs and predators, but I think even limited time for the roosters to get away from each other might be helpful. They'll be fairly cooped up this winter though.

we have electric netting. I haven't had them in the snow with it yet, but it is supposed to work well then too. We have solar chargers that give out a pretty good shock. should keep out dogs, foxes... anything that size. PM me if you want to know where we got it.

I have not seen the reddish color before - interesting, but really quite dark, isn't it?  Do they really throw correct color, or is that speculation?

I did say I think she could. I thought the speculation was implied. I have not breed a deer colored girl and the one I have has a crooked toe and side sprig, so I'm not breeding her.

The tentative who has EOs where list.
