Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Thank you. We got them from a woman at the "Waverly, Iowa Exotic Bird and Animal Swap" in Cedar Falls, Iowa. We bought 10 chicks last Fall. We ended up selling two pairs, but we kept one rooster and five hens. The lady that sold them to us has a website. The URL is: http://www.thecountryhatch.com/Chickens.html They are really nice looking chickens. We just wish that they would lay in the nesting box. My dad calls them "wild" chickens.

Those Basques in your pictures look like mine. I am in Central Texas. I started with a breeding pair I got from a guy who was getting out of the chicken business, and I am so glad I got them. They are favorites, for sure. I have had good luck with incubating the eggs, so I should hopefully be ready to sell hatching eggs this fall.

Woohoo Laura, I'm in La out of Shreveport. Easy shipping for sure. Please let us know when you are ready to sell.

I looked at her website and I don't think she's being too selective with her breeding. I noticed some very dark basque hens.

I had a Recessive Black EO Cockerel hatch last year. I know who the dad was but the mom could have been one of 4 hens (the cockerel all four hens were yellow at hatch).

I was quite fascinated by the Recessive Black cockerel. If it would have been a pullet I probably would have put it in a laying flock and done some test mating but I didn't have room for another cockerel so I couldn't keep him.

I see that "The Country Hatch" have a recessive black in their chicks picture too. Has anyone else been playing with color to see what all is in the EO lines. Photo like this one from a flock that is not being culled for color are very revealing. There is also what looks like a partridge chick in the group. I saw some wild type chicks posted on the Euskal Oilola forums from a hatch in Canada 18 months ago too. Seems like Orozco and company would have had a lot of diversity to work with.

I originally had an all white hen. She had the BRIGHTEST yellow legs! I should have kept her

PS: anyone in northern, central, bay area of CA have EO for sale? Looking for birds!

Anyone try crossings experiments yet? I have a batch of RIR crosses that are doing amazing, and some Bielefelder crosses in the incubator. Can't wait to see them......

Curious, when did you sell your pairs? I just bought a pair of these at the Waverly Swap this spring...I love them. I have hatched out 5 babies, 4 are roos.....The chicks are wonderful, they are so brave. They walk right up to my hand as little ones, now they are 4+ weeks, they come right to me when I go to feed them, walk on my feet, they are just very friendly. My 1 hen, lays an egg nearly every day, I will keep these just due to that fact. I will be interested to know how hardy they are in the cold and how well they lay in winter.
