Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Where would you say we could find some unrelated to Skyline Basque? If I cull the two chicks with leg issues that will leave
us with 5 to grow out, hopefully we'll get both pullets & cockerels.
Find someone with GreenFire lines. I think there is someone in Florida with them.

I have one from Mrs. Fluffy Puffy but sadly she no longer has Basque.

I may have some next Fall.

Remember, all our lines are closely related. Skyline and Greenfire lines came from Canada, and all Canada EOs are from one source. Strive for the most distance you can get in breeding pairs, and cull, cull, cull. Avoid compiling breeding pairs from hatchmates. The breed doesn't deserve any less. Just my opinion, take it with a grain of scratch...

I believe there are folks in several breeds that developed their own lines and do little outcrossing that don't have "inbreeding depression."

I ordered 18 eggs from Skyline, hatched 15 and raised 12 to adulthood. From Greenfire, I rec'd 6 chicks - all in March/April of 2012. First I eliminated all of the mottled and whites. Two developed curled toes, one early and one late. The first had been sold and the second is in the layer flock since she gives me an egg daily.

Out of three roosters, I kept only one --- the one with correct coloring and decent type. I'd like more size, deeper color and a better breast, but he's not too bad. Out of all those birds that reached maturity, only five hens and the one rooster made it into the breeding pen. The chicks I am hatching from their eggs are looking pretty darn good.

Here is a picture of the first two from the fertility test hatch (the one in back is a Swedish Flower Hen). Another batch is still feathering out in the brooder.

Alright, I went and did some looking at my cockerels who I thought had white sickles. The one with white has partially white feathers. No solids. What the word on that?

All white tail or wing feathers is the Spanish DQ. To the best of my knowledge (which is limited

) All NA EO cocks are showing partial white in their tail feathers by the second set of adult feathers. (Which would be the equivalent age of - first moult after POL for the pullets)

So envious of everyone with Standard questions. Guess I'll have to wait till they are out of the shell before asking. I'm happy to have 11 progressing at day 7!
I saw on another thread that you have development in your shipped EO Eggs!

I am so happy for you!
