Yes, I believe those are your girls.

How is this for cruel fate?

I received an assortments of hatching eggs for six rare breeds this spring and these were the results.

Breed 1: 8 eggs --> 4 hatched --> 4 cockerels
Breed 2: 5 eggs --> 2 hatched --> 2 pullets
Breed 3: 4 eggs --> 1 hatched --> 1 cockerel
Breed 4: 3 eggs --> 2 hatched --> 2 pullets
Breed 5: 2 eggs --> 2 hatched -->1 cockerel/1 pullet (okay, finally a little luck)
Breed 6: 1 egg --> zero hatched

This is like my golf game. One out of six holes works out for me the other five are disasters.

Blame on shipped eggs!

Hopefully the next hatches will get better. Maybe in the Fall you can get somone to ship some to you and next year you can hatch some of your own.

Hatching has been like that for me, also.
First I had a rooster who must have been shooting blanks. Two hatches and 30 eggs later, I had one chick.

Then I tried shipped eggs. Got 8 of 13, but 6 were boys.

My most recent hatch, my own eggs did well (new rooster). Shipped eggs were not so good, ranging from 10% to 45% hatch rate. Two of my breeds I only got one chick. At least I got 11 pullets, out of the 20 that hatched.

This summer I'm driving 4 1/2 hours to an event where I can buy good quality 6 week old sexed chicks, of one of my failed hatch breeds. I'm sure I will spend a bit of money, but when I add up the cost of eggs, shipping, time, feed, etc., I think it will be worth it.

My Basque are crowing! Well, one is, anyway. They will be 12 weeks on Friday.

I am wondering what are the most important features when selecting my roosters. Since I started going in and picking them up, one will not come near me (he really doesn't like being picked up). If I sit down for a bit, he will come close, but darts away if I move my hand. Today is the first day that I failed to catch him off guard. This skittish one is the most standard-looking in color. Is friendliness more important than color? If so, my selection is already made, since only 2 are friendly. Or is there a way to train this standard-looking guy to be friendly, or is it best to select for innate friendliness?

Maybe I am over-thinking this. All I know is there is one rooster I want to keep, and I can't seem to make up my mind on the other. My keeper is not standard, but friendly, beautiful colors, and nice bright yellow legs (I know leg color is not a top priority, I just like this guy).
My other choice is a big friendly guy with so-so barring and coloring, or slightly smaller skittish guy with great barring and coloring. I know I have some time to make my pick. Just wondering if others are selecting one feature over another.

One of my EO hens has decided to crow and do the courship dance. Not sure what prompted it. I did a double take when I saw her do it. And she repeated over and over, so there is no doubt which bird is gender confused. Must be something in the water. I have a crowing silkie hen, too.

Does she have a bigger comb and wattles too? MD had a hen that has a damaged ovary and started having male features. If she has this she will not lay eggs.
