Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Yes. She is the smallest hen and has the largest comb & wattles of the hens. That's good to know. How would her ovaries have been damaged? And how can you tell if that's the cause?

Virginia EO people - I have three cockerels that I won't be using in the breeding pens, 28 wks old. Headed to freezer camp unless y'all need them.

Thanks MD. I have two nice boys that I'm going to grow out. Your 3 boys are very handsome, but if you need help processing them... I now know how! ;)

There is some good info here. http://www.animalpicturesarchive.com/view.php?tid=2&did=33882
Starting at the section, description. Took me awhile to find the correct info. There is a lot of bad info out there. If this is what is going on, it is pretty obvious.

MD, do you have a photo of Forrest?

I had 9 out of (I think) 24 which is great for me, but the amazing thing is that, even with this horrid heat, they are all still thriving

One of the reasons I an do happy with my EO's is their way better than average hatch rate from shipped eggs, nothing else came close to it.

How is this for cruel fate?

I received an assortments of hatching eggs for six rare breeds this spring and these were the results.

Breed 1: 8 eggs --> 4 hatched --> 4 cockerels
Breed 2: 5 eggs --> 2 hatched --> 2 pullets
Breed 3: 4 eggs --> 1 hatched --> 1 cockerel
Breed 4: 3 eggs --> 2 hatched --> 2 pullets
Breed 5: 2 eggs --> 2 hatched -->1 cockerel/1 pullet (okay, finally a little luck)
Breed 6: 1 egg --> zero hatched

This is like my golf game. One out of six holes works out for me the other five are disasters.
Hi GaryDean26,

Some of the old timers say a years worth hatches go like this sometimes, then the next year you get more pullets than cockerels. When you start hatching your own, you can select for hens that lay more eggs that become females. Hens have the gene that determines gender in chickens, so like men that only have boys or girls, hens can some times lay more of one gender or the other. That would require a lot of record keeping and keeping each hens eggs separated, so it might not be worth the work unless you start having too high of a ratio of Cockerels with your own hatches.

Bye,

Ron

Ron, congratulations on your BYC spirit award

Rooster Exchange Anyone?
I'm in Central California with two EO roosters from Greenfire. I received them about March 16 of this year. I was wondering if anyone might be interested in an "exchange program" :-) I'd like to get a rooster from a different hatch and thought someone might be interested in the same. I know some of you have commented about not wanting to give your roosters away to people who don't have the same commitment to the breed as you do. Here's a great chance to insure a happy home and keep the breed strong!
Best,
-Brice

Ha! DH just said he'd do it if you give him 55 1/2 cents per mile. ;) Too bad you are 3400 miles away.
