Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

Hi Jeff,

Those are great pictures! Did a Broody hatch them.

Get Skyline and the rest of them posting again. It is a big mistake to only go to that other thread and not post here too. It will be hard to get The Marraduna out into the US if we all hide in a Breed only place. Skyline has not posted here in several months It is hard to get a thread going if the Thread Starter ditches it. I did boost up a thread or two but it is hard.

Do you want me to boost this one?

Ron
I also wish more people from the EO forum would post here. I primarily access the forums from my iPhone using the Tapatalk app, and the EO forum doesn't support it.

so cute!  i SHOULD be getting some basque chicks sometime this week, assuming their hatch goes well...  can't wait!

Good luck with the hatch await! Where did you get your eggs? I'm getting some of Mrs. Fluffy Puffy's stock. I'm anxious to get those eggs hatching! I'll be posting pictures here to keep track of the growth.

i don't have the eggs myself, I am getting them from Just Struttin' Farm, from Deann Disilva -- she's the one with both the eggs and the incubator...

Since people are clamoring for more posts, I will use that as an excuse to post more photos of my roosters! They are 18 weeks old.

this is Eddie:

right side
left side: He's getting some green on his tail, at least on this side. See it?

This is Zuri:

I should try to take a photo of one in my bachelor pen. His feather coloring is much more to the standard, but he is quite small and extremely skittish, so I didn't choose him. Wish I could keep them all!

okay, I'm on a roll, so here are my 3 hens at 18 weeks. I don't think they are really quite as red in the face as they look in the photos!

Marroi. She's the only hen with yellow legs.

Puntu: speckly, with willow legs

Iluna. What's with this hoop-skirt look? She is quite small, very skittish, and kind of odd shaped!

Even standing up, she has a rounded feather bump and her tail points downward. Her legs are grayish:

Thanks, Ron!

Yes - that is my first EO to go broody. She is out of my Round Two Skyline hatch that popped Dec 8, '11. I will be selecting for broodiness in my girls, as I feel it's a natural part of a homestead and farm chicken.

It was a rough set though, she was not as calm and placid as my two year old BA hens that I've been using as surrogates this summer. After I deduced she was definitely broody, I placed 8 eggs under her, and a few days later I attempted to move her from the coop to a crate in the garage. She panicked and broke several eggs and crapped on the rest, so I put her back in the coop and she promptly went back to setting. I put six fresh eggs under her this time, marked them and just kept removing the new eggs that the other hens were laying. Another egg got broken during the 3 weeks, and wouldn't you know they would hatch when I wasn't home. When I did get to them, the other hens had killed one chick and bloodied another, one chick was untouched. I moved the eggs and chicks to the garage, and in my haste I grabbed the wrong hen!

. When I checked back 15 min later, she had pecked all of the chicks... I grabbed her out of the crate, still thinking that my broody had turned on her babies, took her back to the coop and then it dawned on me that I had the wrong hen. Mama was in there, with the pale comb from setting, clucking and upset - looking for her babies. I took her to the crate and she settled right in on them. One didn't make it, two did. The last egg pipped but didn't hatch. Two days later the BA in the crate next to her hatched three EOs - and wouldn't you know - she clucked those EO babies right out from under the Australorp and into her crate! Darnedest thing I've seen with chickens so far! I put the broody BA back to the egglaying flock, and my EO hen has five chicks under her now.

Sorry I can't put pics in to the posts...

A Happy Ending

Glen

I do think that this time of the year a lot of breed threads slow down. Every one is busy, and many of us are waiting for our young birds to mature. I do think it its too bad that James has abandoned this thread.

Buckabucka, your dark roo looks a lot like my big fella. I really need to get out there and count how many pullets I have - I am guessing 12 or so.

Thank you Glen, sorry I called you Jeff...That is Papa Brooder.

Thanks for the Broody information. I have a Silver Grey Dorking that I hope goes broody. I would love that! We had a broody Barred Plymouth Rock when I was growing up and it was cool to see the chicks just show up one day!

I started reading this thread last night... and I have to say, I haven't had much sleep (Not that I do anyways, with a one month old daughter). Sorry if this turns into a long babble, I have a bad habit with that. My hubby and I are new to the chicken world. I'm an animal trainer and when I found out we were expecting our first, I pulled a bit of an ultimatum and we bought our dream home. We're in SE Ontario on 23 acres. The previous owners kept pheasant... so I have 3 indoor runs that are roughly 5X20, a big brooder pen (and back up little brooders), as well as 6 runs that are around 6X12 inside, and again outside. I'm a bird fanatic in general... so this year we started to get a feel for it. We're trial and error people, and DH doesn't do anything in small batches! Right now I've got a mixed flock of broodies I've been raising as a part of the big picture. Hubby has a small Partridge Chantecler project in the works but I get to pick the main flock, who gets to free range in a big open feild DH keeps manicured as if it were a putting green! I've been working on finding the perfect homesteading bird in need of a little help. These guys seem amazing, and I love the support and chatter and excitement on these boards!

Hoping to source some eggs from various places next year... and help would be appreciated. We are right near the border at Ogdensburg NY and do our groceries there... you know, the usual. Flour, milk... eggs. Any help at pointing me in the right direction to get a strong stock foundation going next spring would be fantastic. Would love to get involved with this project on a larger scale! We have the means and the will, just a little dizzy on where to start! I am home all day, every day by choice and would love to contribute to something more exciting.

In the mean time, I'll keep reading. Cheers!
