Euthanasia without the blood?

Actually the starter fluid method is painless, just puts you to sleep it was used for surgery in years past and I almost lost a driver to it years ago. In the winter we often throw our cans in the cab with us to have it handy and one of my drivers had tossed his under the seat. Seems it landed upright and every time he hit a bump the air-ride seat came down and shot a little out. Said he thought he smelled it but then it went away so he didn't worry about it, he was just getting used to the smell. Well after about 50 miles he said he got tired and could hardly hold his eyes open so he got out and walked around. Well the fresh air revived him and he said this went on for close to two hundred miles and the last time he decided to do a walk around and got his flashlight from under the seat and that is when he found the can. Now Bob was about 6'6" or so and weighed around 350lbs and that little can of Ether almost got him.

My grandmother way. Wring their neck. Anyway they will do the flopping around.

Wring their neck untill you feel the neck break,no blood.

You can also hold the bird in the football carry (if the bird is friendly and trusts you), talk to them and place your pointer finger or middle finger on the top of the head at the top of the spinal column and your thumb between the wattles under the beak. Stretch the neck out slowly and push down with the finger on top and back towards the body as you push up with the thumb. Do it with a snapping sorting of motion. It is a clean break at spinal column and brain. The bird is dead immediately although there maybe some involuntary muscle responses. There is no blood or anything visual to bother you.

I think for a pet that is ill, it is a humane way. You can comfort the animal and soothe fears as you do the act. Edit: This is a method that requires a firm touch to break the neck in this manner.

The starter fluid is most definitely painful and it panics them, just as suffocating any living thing would. I did months of research on euthanasia methods, and learned from several university poultry teaching program sources that the ether replaces the oxygen as they breathe in...so they struggle to breathe, and eventually, their lungs collapse and they can even burst blood vessels in the process of struggling so hard to find oxygen. Don't misunderstand - I'm not saying it's wrong or that I don't believe in it - just know what it's about.

Cetawin, I've read this is the best method (most humane) other than chopping their head off, but I've read the description so many times and I just can't visualize it. Not to be morbid, but I wish there was some sort of video out there that would show how this is done. Thanks for letting folks know about this method.

I used the starter fluid method. I used a whole can in a small box on a young, sick chick and it took, at least, a minute and a half of her peeping frantically. It still hurts my heart to think of it. I would never do it again. I bought a dispatcher from England to break the neck. It's unfortunate but, the ways that are kindest to the bird are hardest on the humans.

Kinnip, I've done the starter fluid method, too. I had a bird that I found lying in the pen, as close to death as any animal I've ever seen; she was completely limp when I picked her up. It STILL took almost 10 mins. with a rag saturated in starter fluid held to her nostrils and she fought like the dickens. I cried the entire time, and I don't think I could do this again.

Where did you get the "dispacher" you mentioned?

Ebay. Do a search for chicken dispatcher. They make two sizes, one for chicks and one for adults. This one is for chicks.

Interesting - How does it work? Is it like a giant scissor, or do those little post things at the top do the job?

The posts just lock the two plates together. It breaks the neck without breaking the skin. I have read of people yanking on it and pulling the head off.
