Even if I dont want to hatch chicks, should I still get a rooster???

My roo is not necessarily friendly as in I can't hold him or cuddle with him (I actually can't with any of this new batch) but he isn't mean and he's actually quite gentle with the ladies. They seem to be comfortable with having him around and I feel like he protects them cuz he's freakin' HUGE!
I don't free range them right now but probably will later during the year when the bugs start coming around more. Then I'll feel much better about having him around.
And, I love hearing him crow. He's a gentle crower too.

As you can see you don't "need" a rooster to have happy chickens that lay eggs, but they are fun to watch as they make noises when predators such as hawks fly over head. I have seen my hens go running under bushes after my roo called them and I saw a hawk flying around. Also, my roo finds worms and bugs and calls the girls to come eat...

So cute. I do wish he didn't crow so much though, but really, barking dogs seem more annoying to me?

That is a FACT. If a single neighbor complains about my roo after the YEARS of listening to their dogs howling before the sun comes up on the weekend - -

I have two roos, and I do enjoy watching their antics. One will pretend to have found a treat and call the ladies. When they come over to check it out, he starts into his goofy rooster dance. They usually look at him as if to say "You called me over here for THAT?", and wander off. He actually looks dejected for a moment, but then tries again. Hysterical to watch. And both my roos are very alert and warn the girls when a hawk flies overhead. I doubt they'd be much help if a dog got into the run, but maybe they'd slow it down enough for the ladies to get away.
