Ever heard of "Beggar’s Chicken"?

Not only have I heard of it-I've had it!

Okay, so not quite the same version you guys are thinking of. Whew!

My father is a pottery professor by trade. He used to have potluck meals at the end of term with his students, and his contribution to the meal would be to do Beggar's Chx. He just used a chicken from the grocery, filled it with carrots, potatoes, celery, herbs, etc. and then "wrapped" it in a huge slab of clay. It would then be cooked in a kiln or in a raku fire. I was pretty young though, so I don't remember how long it cooked or any other details. It was very moist and delicious though!

I agree. Just thought I'd throw in the "version" I've had. It really is quite good cooked in the clay...

WAY different than getting a whole chicken, guts and all, and cooking it.

I am not married to the idea of leaving the guts in, I just find it interesting that some cultures have done it that way and apparently found it appetizing. Makes me wonder.

I'm not going to pay for potters clay. I'm just going to dig up clay soil. Any bugs in it will get cooked , just like the chicken!

I want to know how it comes out.
