One of my RIR girls has been sitting on eggs for 4 days (3 nights now), and (

) is she one cranky lady!! I've been watching to see if she was going to change her mind, but after the third night with no change moved her into a confined nest box in the brooder/hatching room. But I'm a little nervous doing so. Have you ever seen a RIR successfully hatch out eggs? All I've ever heard says they won't?

I've heard of it, but never had one do it. I do have an RIR hen that is determined to be the nanny for the 4 ee chicks that I gave to my broody BO. The BO is a complete witch (I know, they're supposed to be sweet, but she's NOT) but she lets the RIR snuggle in the nest box with her and the chicks. It's crazy!

About two years ago I had a RIR turn broody. She successfully hatched out 9 chicks. One of them died right away. One was killed by my dog. ( The chick ventured through the chain link fence of the dog's run). Two are roosters so that left us with 5 hens which we still have. Our RIR was a good mom and wouldn't let us get near the peeps. We still have the roosters too. We have a white leghorn hen that is presently setting on several eggs...I have never had a white leghorn do that.

Hey loneoak05,

Thank you for the reply - you give me courage. I just don't want to feel like I'm being mean by locking her up in the brooder room if there's a chance her willingness to sit is just going to be temporary. I'll just have to keep an eye on her.
