Ever trim your guineas nails?

For the ripped off toenails that are bleeding like crazy, more than the corn starch, Wonder Dust or blood stop powder can control... what works best for me is soak the tip with super glue then immediately dip it in baking soda(dry)... the baking soda makes the glue set/dry instantly. Sometimes you need 2-3 coats of glue & baking soda to get it to seal up and completely stop bleeding. Guineas are heavy bleeders, and when they rip a toenail off they usually do a doozy of a job of it

If it's really bad I'll also wrap black electrical tape over the whole toe to protect the toe/glue from being pecked at. Then I keep the bird caged on soft bedding for a couple days to make sure it doesn't start bleeding again. The glue (or glue and tape) usually stays on long enough to give the new nail a chance to start growing, and in the meantime it covers all those raw nerves that are exposed... plus there's no blood for the others to peck at.

Glad you got your guy's nails trimmed, and hubby didn't have to hold the bird lol.

There is a quick drying agent for super glue, works on any of the formulas of cyanoacrilate glues one brand is "zip kicker". you can find it and several formulas of "super glue" at hobby stores that sell remote controlled planes and such. we also use it for wounds etc. it is very handy to have the quick drying agent on hand.

i would never try. i never have, never will.

If you raise enough Guineas, chances are you will end up with some birds that have extra long toenails that will become a problem if not dealt with. If left long they can cause the bird pain and injury, not to mention being broken or ripped off from getting caught on something and then the bird will be suffering pain and severe blood loss from that. We trim nails when it needs to be done, for the benefit of the bird or birds, we don't just go give our birds pedicures just for the fun of it, lol.

So if you never will trim long toenails in your flock if it needs to be done, then hopefully you have someone to take care of it for you. IMO, it really isn't something you should let go if the welfare of your birds matter to you.

Plain white sugar works as styptic as well.... I had a hen that got a rip in her comb once and all I had was the sugar it worked great.

Got the nails trimmed. I caught him, held him DH trimmed away. We will have to trim them more in the up coming wks. I didn't want to take too much off, but was prepared to stop the bleeding in case we did.

I always have the stop bleeding stuff you find in the bird section. I have had to use it on my dogs nails, works really well if the nail starts bleeding. The only real bad bleeder I had was the bird whose nail was ripped off when I caught it with the net. Seemed to bleed for days, but think she just kept injuring it again.
