My Coop
My Coop
I first raised 6 chicks and then got 3 turkey poults. the original 6 transitioned to their coop and then we added a matching turkey house to move the poults. after several days of putting the turkeys in their house at night, they decided to move in with the chickens. they have been in the same coop for a few weeks now but with everyone’s growth and the fact that they all gravitate to the floor space and roost close to the window, it’s getting a bit crowded! I was thinking of adding a doghouse for the turkeys since I turned the “unused” turkey house into my chick house. My question is....how do I get the turkeys to sleep in a different house now that they have imprinted on the chicken coop?

they must’ve read my mind when i posted this because tonight my 2 bronze were roosting on the coop roof!! My netting is arriving tomorrow and I’ve got to get it up quick before they escape!!

I don’t know how big your doghouse is in comparison to your turkeys. I don’t have turkeys but I would suggest doing what I did for my chickens. I locked them in with food and water for two days and nights But they were small (8wks). Maybe you could put them in wire the front door so they can’t get out until you let them out. Repeat as necessary until they get it. Best wishes

Turkeys need a taller and bigger structure than a doghouse. Figure on an absolute minimum of 10 Sq. ft. of coop space per turkey. Turkeys do roost so they need a proper roosting area where they can get up off of the ground. You cannot meet either of those needs with a doghouse.

AB93AF3C-DAF4-481B-9764-7040423F6DDA.jpeg we got the netting roof installed today along with a play and roosting post. Took the playpen off the chick house and let everyone have full integration. Had to wrangle the chicks a bit to put to bed. (my little hoppy has to be put in the coop every night but managed to get outside on his own this am) Mr. Cheepers (BB white) is still rooming with the chickens, but I let the bronzes keep their roosting spot on top of the coop tonight!
