i use a box when they are little then a wire dog crate when they cant fit through the gaps. i use the nipples for my older chickens with a 5 gal bucket, i got them off ebay for really cheap, they came from over seas so it took awhile but iwasnt in a rush for them. my hubby drilled out 5 holes in the bottom put some pipe tape on them then put them in. i kept their old waterer in the pen till i noticed everyone drinking from it (it took them like 2 secs to figure it out)
I should have recorded the way we did it this weekend - It looked quite funny! Our brooder was inside our basement, we used a large dog crate. We first carried the whole crate outside and let them out to have some supervised free time scratching around. Then, because 12, 6 week old chicks in a large metal dog crate with wet shavings is really heavy, we picked it up and put it on top of the little red wagon!! When we got to the coop, we opened the door to the coop, wheeled the crate right up to it, one of the kids jumped in the coop and we got most of the chicks to walk down a ramp into the coop. THe few that didn't follow their sisters we had to pick out of the crate, but once they got into their spacious (well compared to the brooder anyway) new digs, they were like pigs in you know what!
