Hi all! It seems my cold winter days have come to an end for the season and I am sitting on 35-40 pounds of cracked corn my flock will show no interest in for the next 10+ months.

I'm thinking it just needs to be added to the compost pile until it is gone in moderation. I think it isn't high enough in protein to become a fermented feed base but would appreciate ideas from the community.

Thanks,

Allen

I would not compost it. It will be a huge attractant for rodents and other undesirable creatures. You could advertise is as "free" on craig's list, or even put up a note at the feed store. Some one will thank you. Next time, buy whole corn and you can then plant the extra to use as green manure crops, or you can even keep it for the following year, as long as you store it in a very dry place. Or buy whole barley, and sprout it all winter. I still have plenty barley and BOSS left. I'll use some as green manure, and save the rest for next year. The germination will be down a bit, but will still be acceptable for sprouting.

I use anything extra (past best-by date, damp, got mixed with cow chop by accident) as rooster-feed because I don't really think too much about the effect of fatty livers on something I'm going to butcher in a month anyway.

If you don't keep roos or hatch eggs, then I agree with Lazy Gardener.

Isn't cracked corn less nutritious than whole corn? I heard that somewhere, and it makes sense to me that the nutrients would degrade faster when the seed's cracked.

I would love to hear about what to do with the excess BOSS, I can plant that too? It seems that they are taking the Milo, barley and wheat from the pre roosting crop fillings I offer in the evening now.

Also my cat says you are wrong about this anything that can attract a rodent is something desireable.
