Hi from PA! I am living with my boyfriend on what used to be his grandparents farm, and we are beginning to make it a small farm once again. We have two female dogs, a black lab and a yorkie. Tomorrow I will be picking up our chicks. We will have 10 layers (hoping for 1 rooster), and 15 broilers.
We are in a rural farming community and there are many predators around (especially at night), but idealy we would like to free range at least the layers during the day. I have heard that it is easy to train them to go into the coop at night.
Oh, did I mention that we didn't build our coop yet? Any advice? I have been reading the forums and other info on this site and our original plan (before we decided to get the layers) was for a 8 X 8 coop, but I am a little worried that it will be cramped if we have to put the broilers in there too, or should they be seperated. We have a lot of PT lumber scraps from an old deck, and we also have about 12 old pallets and pieces of tin roof leftover from another project.
Thank you! You all seem so helpful and friendly, I am excited to be part of your community!
