Hi there,
My name is Laura and my husband and I recently started raising ducks!

We live in Connecticut, on 6 acres with a man-made pond (about 2000 gallons).

We started our flock with 1 week old ducklings in April of 2017:
2 pekins (we thought BOTH female but ended up with 1 drake)
1 Swedish blue duck
1 Cayuga drake
which totaled 4- 2 ducks, 2 drakes.

One of our pekins fell ill (sticky eye, major neurological problems, horrible waddling and respiratory issues to the point of falling over when preening and when I brought to the avian vet - she recommended euthanizing. That is when we found out Dixie was a BOY. :(

Soon, we adopted 2 more (3months old) and it turns out one of them is a drake
which totaled 2 drakes, 3 ducks.

In August we got 3 ducklings (ducks) and they are doing great!

Welcome to BYC! I'm very sorry to hear about your duck, Also, When a single hen duck is over-bred that could cause them to lose their ability to walk, Or they'll hobble and limp around all the time the drakes will also pull out most of the feathers on the back of a hen's neck and will do it so often they'll start to bleed. Over-breeding will also put a lot of pressure on the duck's wings and will most likely break or pluck out most of her wing feathers. The ratio for ducks for mating is about 3-4 hens per drake. So i'd suggest either re-homing a drake of getting a couple more hens. I remember when i had first gotten ducks. Our ratio was terrible! We had 3 drakes and 2 hens so our ducks were very un-healthy until we got more. We now have two adult drakes but only one is active. And two younge drakes and 15 hen so we dont need to worry about that now.
