Those are excellent selections.Dominiques (wanted Barred Hollands but could find them anywhere)
Cuckoo Maran (my wife's uncle highly recommended these)
Black Astralorp (seemed like a good breed)
Ameraucana (novelty of different colored eggs)
Salmon Faverolles (thought they were different and neat)
Thoughts on our selections?
We will have 15 girls in total (assuming that they all make it). I have also been told by someone in our area that there is a monthly meeting of poultry enthusiasts that have a swap meet of sorts on the first Saturday of each month starting in April. They said it was a good way to see other breeds and pick up layers if I wanted to get some more. I worry about introducing new birds to the flock later on...but it might be something I try in a year or two.
Really looking forward to getting them! We are expecting our first born this month, so my original plan of having the chicks shipped in April got pushed out a few months. Gives me more time to make everything the way I want though.
) Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Cluckcluckgirl is right about your Ameraucanas; unless your ordered true Ameraucanas from a breeder, they will be Easter Eggers. Hatcheries frequently market their EEs incorrectly under the name Ameraucana (often misspelled as Americana or Americauna), but they are actually hybrids bred to lay different colored eggs. Our Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's (pictured in my avatar) favorite chickens. She loves their colored eggs. I love the chocolate eggs of the Cuckoo Marans. In my personal opinion, they are the prettiest eggs in the entire chicken world. Good luck with your flock.
