Excited to be here!

Welcome to BYC, Tyler. Glad you decided to our flock. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chicks are you getting?

A hodgepodge really...here is what we ordered:

Dominiques (wanted Barred Hollands but could find them anywhere)
Cuckoo Maran (my wife's uncle highly recommended these)
Black Astralorp (seemed like a good breed)
Ameraucana (novelty of different colored eggs)
Salmon Faverolles (thought they were different and neat)

Thoughts on our selections?

We will have 15 girls in total (assuming that they all make it). I have also been told by someone in our area that there is a monthly meeting of poultry enthusiasts that have a swap meet of sorts on the first Saturday of each month starting in April. They said it was a good way to see other breeds and pick up layers if I wanted to get some more. I worry about introducing new birds to the flock later on...but it might be something I try in a year or two.

Really looking forward to getting them! We are expecting our first born this month, so my original plan of having the chicks shipped in April got pushed out a few months. Gives me more time to make everything the way I want though.

Those sound like a very nice selection of chicken breeds! One thing though, I hear about many places labeling chicks as "Ameraucana" when they are actually a mixed breed known as an Easter Egger. Easter Eggers lay anywhere from blue, to green, to pink, or brown eggs depending on their genetics. They are also a wonderful breed. Congratulations on the new addition!! I hope that he/she will be healthy and wonderful!

Those are excellent selections. :o) Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Cluckcluckgirl is right about your Ameraucanas; unless your ordered true Ameraucanas from a breeder, they will be Easter Eggers. Hatcheries frequently market their EEs incorrectly under the name Ameraucana (often misspelled as Americana or Americauna), but they are actually hybrids bred to lay different colored eggs. Our Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's (pictured in my avatar) favorite chickens. She loves their colored eggs. I love the chocolate eggs of the Cuckoo Marans. In my personal opinion, they are the prettiest eggs in the entire chicken world. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Excellent advice from Michael.

Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed. They are affectionate friendly, calm, great layers and cold hardy.
