I am new to raising chickens. I am a science teacher, and I had a student who really wanted to do a hatching project for her final exam. She works with 4h and lives on a farm. My husband and I have wanted to start raising our own chickens for a while so we took this opportunity to hatch eggs. We ended up with 6 chicks. The eggs were given to us from a local farmer who has a large mix of breeds. We can really only identify the lavender Orpington. We have 4 others of the same breed (which we can’t identify) and 1 additional chicken of another unknown breed.
Right now they are 5.5 weeks old and already happily running around scratching in the dirt and eating bugs.
I am hoping to learn way more about chickens (beyond the initial research and planning my husband and I did this last year) and how to provide the best environment for them.
