Excitement jumping.

Hello everyone. I have noticed when I free range my chickens, Charlie my leghorn rooster will hop excitedly.

It is already pretty funny watching him prance across the yard from hen to hen on his little spindly legs, but he also likes to 'popcorn' like a guinea pig without flapping. It is fun to watch.

I was wondering if anyone else's roosters or hens do this and if you think they do it just to show their bubbling excitement.

It's all about good health and testosterone levels. Roosters can be great fun.

Oh yeah! My roo likes to hop in one spot turning like a little ballerina. He's quite happy and not one bit ashamed to show it.

Mine don't do that, but they're almost constantly tidbitting their hens. My young Sumatra had a pebble the other day and he was trying so hard to convince his hens to come check it out- made me think of a penguin!

You should make a video of your Roos happy dance!

I had a Leghorn roo a few years ago and he did the same thing. He caught a praying mantis one day and I realized at that point where the wedding "chicken dance" came from!

I wish mine stopped at tidbitting hens, I caught him trying to tempt a box turtle with a leaf. Still can't help but wonder what could have been.

Now that sounds like a nice chicken story, looking forward to hearing it sometimes. Glad to know other people's feathered friends will jump about happily and my Charlie isn't alone in his bounce-club.

I enjoy my roos too...I have a couple that will cackle, crow and dance about when one of his hens start singing the egg song...gets quite noisy around here at times but I love it!!!
