This was an exciting morning. I welcomed the sun with a look out the back window, expecting to see the chickens emerging. Instead there was a raccoon pacing the bottom level of the coop with the door still closed. Figured that's it, time to start a new flock. I went out and heard some chickens still stirring up top, so I opened the door hoping to save the remaining ones. All five scrambled out, leaving the raccoon cowering in the corner. So I shut the door and called pest control. The chickens miraculously seem fine.
We've been having trouble with the door motor and I'd accidentally left the larger maintenance door open yesterday. I imagine the bandit went in that way, and it closed behind him. I've never seen a raccoon in my neighborhood (possums yes). I imagine wildlife is encroaching pretty much everywhere due to less traffic these days.
