LOL!

Sometimes I start giving my chickens a bit of credit in the intelligence department... and then they do really stupid stuff. (of course, supposedly smart humans often do really stupid stuff too)
I have some chickens that are afraid of almost nothing, except for a small black plastic bin that I rest their waterer on. I can drive the tractor right up to them and they don't spook. But if I pick that plastic bin up and hold it over thier heads, they run in terror. Now mind you, this plastic thing is in their coop 24/7. Every time I move their coop, I pick it up. So several times a week, I pick it up, and every time....... panic. It's weird. And I'd be lying if I said it didn't amuse me just a bit.

scratch'n'peck :

Chickens seem pretty freaked out by big things lifted over their head. My chickens hate it when I carry a tarp around the yard.

EUREKA!!! you're right, of course!!! i honestly tell everyone who comes over and wants to hold the chicks how important it is to lift them, "palm up from their 'belly' bc reaching for them from above seems like aggression from a predator" ... WOW looks like its my common sense that needs a workout - LOL!!!

thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

Mine are terrified of bags of feed - which makes it easy to get the bags in the pen, because they all scream and run away from the gate when they see the dreadful bags approaching on the handtruck.
