I am a 4H mom and aunt. My nephew is going to show ducks at fair this year. I am the one that makes his 4H animal projects happen. What are some good breeds of ducks for him to get started with? He has never shown an animal before. "Farm" animals make him nervous lol. So I am looking for something fairly easy going that won't attack like a goose would just for looking at it.

Thanks

Most any domestic duck will be fine. Will he be raising this duck from a tiny duckling so he forms a bond with it? Also it would be a good idea to raise 2-3 ducklings together since ducks are flock animals they really do much better if they have some of their own kind to grow up with. Will someone be working with him to teach him how to care for ducklings/ducks. So he won't be nervous around them?
If there are any poultry shows in your area that maybe a good place to start usually their are people who have poultry for sale and are also willing to talk about their poultry.
Here on BYC there is a forum where you can see who is having poultry shows in areas of the country.

I will be helping him as will my daughter. I had planned on getting a few since they are flock animals. I want him to have the experience from egg to adult as I think he will be able to get more comfortable around them when they are small and he will adjust as they grow. I will check out the poultry shows! 😊
