Last year I built a duck pen out of reclaimed pallets. The size was 16x26 feet which I thought was plenty big. But I am starting to learn that with ducks bigger is always better. I am adding an extension to it because one of the sides caved in this past winter. So I am removing that one side and pushing it out to the end of the long side of my duck house.

It will make my pen L shaped and adding another 15x 25 feet area to it. So I think I will have nearly 775sq ft to give my new ducklings. Think it might be big enough this time, with bantam ducks, and only a few light ducks for laying eggs.

With a 10x26 ft house I think the ducks might be set up between the two.

I will try to post pictures of things when it’s not raining.

Here are some pictures of what I am working with.

This is the front of the house and pen as you approach it.

These are the back part where I am expanding to. Please excuse the mess I have a little yard clean up still to do.

I know last year my ducks destroyed the pen. They didn’t like the idea of free ranging, so they stayed in that pen all the time. So I wanted to make it big enough this time.
Monkey see, Monkey do and if gate is left open they will all follow the bravest ones..

Hello just thought I’d show you a trick we used this spring while building our duck run out of reclaimed pallets as well.

All the pallets are not only screwed together on the sides but my husband also used 2x4 (possibly 2x8 can’t quite remember) along the top of the pallets all the way around. It adds a bit of more bracing.

That’s a good idea. I might look into it some time. I have to do things in small bits
