Some time this week I will be picking up some babies that needed a home. Tops I will end up with 5 more ducks, but rules of sex say I won't keep that many (yes, I have a home the extra boys already). My current setup is not going to work so hues who's gotta build... Yep, me.
Okay, background and current layout:
Original ducks used an outhouse on a cement foundation with a cement "can". Got some chickens and built a coop with attached shed for the husband to store his mower and other junk (because a 3 car pole barn wasn't enough). Got some turkeys and stole the shed, now the turkey hut. Built a "stall" for the Turks as they were still a bit smaller and I wanted an option to secure a broody should I get one. Started keeping (then 4) ducks in front section of shed for more room. Lost a duck, hatched some, and the turkeys are getting huge. So now I have 2 ducks (3 month olds that still get picked on by the drake a bit) in the outhouse, 3 ducks in the front of the shed, and 12 turkeys roosting above them.
Outhouse is 4x5 on cement with a standard size can in there, people door, window, and stink pipe. Not big enough...
My plan:
Addition built from standard pallets attached to the 4 ft side with walls to the height of the pallets. I plan to match to roof to the current slope of the existing roof to allow ventilation. One complete new wall will be a drop door/ramp for easy access to clean out.
The new structure will be sitting on field stones to keep it off the ground to prevent rot.
Prebuilding issues/problems/concerns:
Securing the pallets against nocturnal predators yet keeping some of the "opennes" of the pallets for ventilation.
How to remove the can without destroying the concrete foundation of the original structure.
Making the eyesore that is the outhouse into a functioning structure instead of a mowing obstacle.
I would love any thoughts, suggestions, or opinions on my project especially from anyone who has built a pallet structure.
(any spelling errors or strange way out of place words are completely autocorrect's fault)
