In the Brooder

I recently added 2 new pullets (hatched 5/14) to my 2 older hens. I currently have 4 more (hatched 6/18) that I will be adding to my flock in the next 2 - 3 weeks. When is the best time to introduce my younglings? How old should they be? My run is plenty large (128sq/ft) to house a few distractions.

I have tried to attach pictures but for whatever reason I'm told the file was not an image.

Now is a great time to start gradually introducing the youngest to the older chickens. Creating an area in the coop or run where they can see each other but not touch each other for a few weeks should make the integration much easier and less stressful for you and the birds.

How would you do this? Should I put them in a dog crate inside the run during the day and then back in the brooder at night?

Where are you located? I'm not trying to steal your personal data, just trying to get a handle on what your nighttime low temperatures might be. Unless you are having temperatures near freezing they should be able to stay outside day and night based on temperature. The question may be how predator safe is the run. If it is not predator proof I understand your reluctance to leave them out at night.

How big is the coop? Can you put the dog crate in there? That should be safer from predators and will train them to go to sleep in the coop when you can let them out.

In general, how big in feet is your coop? Your run is decent for 8 chickens though may be a bit tight during integration. Of more concern is how much room will they have in the coop during integration.

I live in NC so the night time temps are no issue. My run is predator proof and has a metal roof so they would be protected from rain as well. As for the coop, it is 4x8 but would be a tight fit to put a medium dog crate in.

A 4x8 will be tight to integrate 8 birds in. There is no extra room for them to get out of each other's way.

Since the run is predator proof I'd put the dog crate in the run and leave the chicks out there for a week or two for the "look but don't touch" part, then try letting them mingle. Put clutter in there and let them sleep in the dog crate or wherever they want to sleep. Just take it slow. Good luck!
