Expectant Mom in Utah

Hello, and welcome to BYC!! :frow How exciting for you to be fulfilling a lifelong dream of chicken ownership! You'll find all the information you'll ever need, and if you can't find it just ask.

Hi Meg-in-MT,
I have a daughter in SW Montana. She lives in Big Sky, what beautiful countty, amazing views in all directions.

Ah! I see. You are not hatching them out, you are buying day old chicks. Most hatcheries have a 90% sexing guarantee so hopefully you will have all pullets!
I bought one male chick and ended up with two. If you end up with a cockerel, just re-home him. If he's nice, someone may want him for their flock. If not, someone will take him for their freezer.

The FREEZER!!!
THAT's why I'm hoping they're all girls.

Wow, what a small world, huh? Big sky is only a couple hours from me! I have to agree about the views, but I may be a little biased. :)

I know. I don't much like it either but it's a reality for the mean boys. Rarely do people want a mean boy in their flock.
My unexpected cockerel was a very nice guy. I still had someone who wanted to put him in the freezer. I finally found a lady who fell in love with him and took him home for her 4 hens. He was in heaven!
