Oh I gone and done it, the Mister will never let me live this one down.
Didn't research company before I ordered. Got a shipment of scraggly, likely dead, expensive sticks.

What's your best recommendation for attempting to revive bare root sticks of things?

This order includes phlox, cherry tree, Eastern red bud trees, hazelnut trees, black eyed Susan, a butterfly bush and more...

FYI, the only thing Burgess catalogs are good for is firestarter.

AMEN
Been there done that!
Nothing I ordered from there lived. .
Well one forsythia Bush did. But it's taken 3 years to grow to 3 feet tall.

I haven't ordered from them, but have gotten a lot of bare root trees and shrubs from the Arbor Day foundation, which also has a bad rep for the plants dying (although they will replace for free).
I have had a lot of luck if I soak the roots in water for 4 to 6 hours prior to planting. I actually had someone from our local extension office tell me that with bare root it is often better not to add fertilizer or potting soil with fertilizer because it can burn or shock the roots. Best to plant in local soil from your ground, even if planting in a pot.
Two of my three hazelnut trees are leafing out now, and I only lost one of the eight trees I planted (oak, dogwood, spruce, and redbud). They all looked dead when I got them, and were just "sticks".

I ordered from a different company and everything looked dead.
I planted them anyway in soil mixed with miracle grow potting mix. Everything grew except one iris.

I like the potting them up idea.

Like said, We just ordered 100 Hazelnut tree from the MD tree nursery and they all sprouted this year. I can't talk about said company, but I bought Dolgo crab apple tree from Willis and they grew, but I can't hardly keep them alive. They grew, but of two one dies the first winter, they replaced that one and next winter the other dies. Still got the one and waiting to see if it dies this winter.

They coat the bare roots in a clay to protect them during shipping. As far as i can tell they all are growing. It's raining so darn much out here we can't find some of them as the undergrowth in the wood has gotten so tall.
