When they say chickens are addicting, man, they aren't kidding. I started out saying I wanted 4.. which turned into 8.. which turned into 12... which then turned into 14.

I then said that I for sure.. 150% knew that I didn't want to keep a rooster. We only live on 1.25 acres and have neighbors that I am sure wouldn't want to hear a rooster crowing all night and day.

Well, we bought a "female" Black Langshan pullet that was a few days old that we fell in love with and named her Luna. Luna is now 6 weeks old and has turned out to be a Louie. We renamed him Duckie because his feathered feet make him look like a little duck when he walks. I can't bear the thought of getting rid of him. So far, he is the most precious little guy and seems so laid back. I'm looking for those who have owned a Black Langshan roo because I'm really wanting to hear about your experience. I have to say, I'm a bit intimidated at the thought of keeping one because I've heard nightmare stories about mean roosters. This was definitely not in the plan. My girls don't free range and our coop is 8x8 and the run is 16x8 with another 8x8 section being built on next week.

I'm not familiar with Black Langshan rooster behavior, but I was really intimidated to keep a rooster too. My husband talked me into keeping one and I was terrified, my mom always told me horror stories about the roosters on her dad's farm. This article was really helpful for me, so far we've had a really positive experience:

I also have had this experience with my first batch of 3 chickens. When I found out one was a rooster I was getting everything ready to find him a home, but we ended up keeping him. He is a very beautiful boy and my mom's favorite chicken now . He has never gotten aggressive (he's actually kind of scared of people), and his crowing doesn't really bother anybody. He isn't that loud and doesn't crow that often. He also keeps an eye on the girls, keeps them together and tells them if theres a hawk. The only thing I don't love is that he is always trying to mate with my girls.
