To avoid shipping problems, the best ting to do is order your birds from the hatchery that is closest to where you live. If hatchery A is 300 miles away, and hatchery B is 2000 miles away, it can make a world of difference how well the chicks arrive.

I got my chickens from McMurray last April. One died in transit (it was flat as a pancake!), one died the 1st night, and a third got an eye infection, but she pulled through.

One cockerel (I never did figure out what breed he was, but he was gorgeous) was pretty much noticeably a male early on, two others looked as though they might be. I think that's a pretty fair number. The cockerel and suspicious ones got shipped off to a farm.

I did get several extras, all of breeds I ordered, which was great.

So far, so good. They've been healthy and lay plenty of eggs. I wasn't looking for show winners, but I think my hens are cute.

I've ordered the last 2 years from McMurray. Each time all the chix arrived just fine. Followed the instructions they give to water and feed after they got here, and everyone pulled thru the shipping ordeal.
Last year the free extra chick was a gold maran hen. The year before I received a delaware roo. M McMurray is great.

I saw a program once that featured MM, I'll never order from them because they throw the male chicks in a grinder.

If and when I do order chicks, I'll give the small breeders my business.

I see this thread is a little old...but I thought I'd reply anyway....

I ordered 25 straight run Light Brahmas (standards) from them in July 2006. I ended up with 17 roosters. All of them were very hardy, active & healthy when they arrived & all made it to adult chicken hood.

I would not hestitate to purchase from them again, although I'd spend the extra $ to get more hens.

As for IDEAL, I was not impressed. I bought 12 Sultan eggs which were supposed to be STANDARDS. I ended up with TWO bantams.

Okay hear is my deal i belong to 4-H aswell and I really do not recomend ordering birds from hatcheries. For you do not know what their quality will be for you can get an okay bird or you can get a real stinker for the show. Because with some the hatcheries get from breeders that take advantage and do not have the best breeding stock of which they say. For i bought 25 birds when i was first began and i will never do it again to get show birds. they all practically turned out to be males i got like only 9 hens out of 25 (how rigged is that) then their quality was no good. But if you want pet birds i do recomend hatcheries. But for show i recommend breeders espcially tell them that you want to show and many are happy to help get you a good bird. Though for a 4-H show i wouldn't worry to much have fun with them.
