Experiences with Scratch and Peck Organic feed and/or Cascade feed?

Hi everyone,

We are getting our first chicks mid-March so I'm doing all my research now to source the best feed for them. We want organic and soy free, ideally also corn free so we can control how much corn they get via scratch.

Looks like we only have a couple options.

One being Scratch and Peck's line. The other being Cascade feeds from Magill Ranch.

I'd love to hear from anyone using either on if they'd recommend them. I have heard good things about Cascade but... they only sell 50lb bags, Scratch and Peck offers 25lb bags. We'll only have 4 chickens... so we don't need a lot.

I have been feeding the Cascade feeds from the beginning. I really like it. I have spoken with them, and I really like their commitment to organic and local. We do not feed any corn or soy, either.

I am not sure if Scratch and Peck is certified organic, or is in the process of getting certification. With that being said, that is what I feed my hens. I have very positive comments on the eggs! The hens love it. I feed them the soy and corn free feed. Good luck and have fun with your chicks, it is a blast!

Hi all, we were one of the first stores to offer the feed from Scratch and Peck when they opened last fall. I would say that 90 % of the people who have purchased it have been very happy with it, their chickens just love it. Only a few have ever told me that the birds don't like it as much. I have visited the mill many times and talked with Diana and Bryan a lot, and am completely supportive of the feed. They are trying out some new feed ingredients with the camelina, but their formulas are based on Fertrell research - the Fetrell company has a great reputation in the organic / sustainable agriculture community. Cost is an issue for many of my customers, but if you can afford it, I highly reccomend it. With all my birds I go through about a bag a day of feed, so for me, it's a financial issue right now. As soon as I build my markets up, I will make the switch. Great folks - great feed.

Thanks for the comments everyone. We ended up going with Cascade. While I was very interested in trying Scratch and Peck, we're not in WA and I found out that shipping was going to be $19 per 25lb bag...so that sort of made the choice for us since we can get Cascade delivered to a local drop point for free.

We're getting our chicks this week!! Black Copper Marans, Wheaton Ameraucana, Mottled Java and Blue Orpington!

Thanks for the note Jamie. Our chicks are doing really well, they took to the feed immediately! They seem to really love it. About to switch to the developer version in another week.

One question for you if you don't mind, do you recommend feeding it dry or wet? I feed it to them dry, but occasionally take what they didn't finish and mix it with some yogurt to be sure they are getting all the small bits. Want to be sure they are benefiting from the right balance of all the good stuff in your feed. But I generally prefer to feed it dry since it is easier to clean up and I worry about how quickly wet feed will start to go bad.

My chickens went mad for the scratch and peck, it was like candy lol. But living in Montana it's impossible to get unless shipped and the shipping plus the cost is was over the top. We are hoping to take a trip to Spokane next month to pick up a winters worth. I have never seen my birds eat there food with such gusto. I know the gas for the truck is was more then the shipping would be, but we need a small vacation to lol. Oh and Washington lets you buy fresh milk straight from the cow! Montana its illegal

Scratch and Peck is certified organic and non GMO. It's very highly thought of out here and yes I do use it as well.

your very lucky, I wish I could get some, but I can not go any where now and it's to expensive to ship
