Experiment in classical conditioning to make quieter chickens

Shame on you. How about if we shoot you in the rear end and see if it hurts you! Chickens aren't always quiet. You should give them to someone who will care for them properly.

Why do people like to make a big deal about everything. When your dog barks too much you do the same thing-classically condition them to not bark when you don't want them to. With the same logic you would say: you got a dog knowing that dogs like to bark. Now, you don't want your dog to bark every time someone else's dog does, so get rid of it? I don't know of anyone that has done that, most people clasically condition them to not bark when not needed. Or in case of babies: you had a baby knowing that babies like to cry and now you don't want your baby to be cryng all the time. So better alternative here is gettinig rid of the baby or clasically conditioning the baby to not cry when they do not have a need?

Now you do. Got rid of a dog last year and one of the reasons was that he couldn't be trained on just what he could bark at and for how long. Kept barking at the deer, which are not a threat and are always here at night. He also kept killing baby chicks and wasn't responding to that training either, so he had to go...but the barking was definitely a factor.

I've had three dogs so far in my life and each could be trained to keep barking to a minimum and only to ward off real threats to the home or livestock, but that dog could not learn it. Nice dog in all other ways, but a pure idiot on barking and aggression to young animals. He's got a really nice home now with someone that keeps him indoors at night, so I'm sure barking is not an issue there.
