I need an answer to a question that has been bugging me: Do I have a male or female Welsh Harlequin? We hatched these babies ourselves and according to beak color (which is 90 percent accurate) we should have two females; aptly named Thelma and Louise :) They were hatched April 20 and 21 respectively, which makes them about six weeks old. Louise is quacking and has been for a couple weeks. Thelma is the one in question. This duck is a silver phase Welsh Harlequin.

In the video I am holding the duck in question. You can hear Louise in the background quacking away (that is the other duckling; which is for sure a female.)

Here is a picture of them at hatch (Thelma is on the left):

Video I took a couple hours ago:

Well he/she is still peeping. So I don't know how you could say. Sometimes they take longer to quack.
A woman's husband told her she couldn't keep her two ducklings as they started growing and smelling (she had a pen in her house) so she gave them to us last year. She had named them Hansel and Gretel. Because Hansel's head was darker. Well Hansel started quacking shortly after we got them so we switched the names. Hansel was now Gretel.....a couple weeks later the newly named Hansel started quacking!! They are now Lisa and Diamond! :)

the one your holding is probably a male. i have two ducks and the female got her big duck voice like 2 weeks before the other duck.

so i had one quacking and one still peeping and the one peeping i has turned into a male. male ducks like humans take longer to mature so dont get their big boy voices until after the girls have their voice.

I started getting suspicious when the first one was quacking and the other wasn't. Also the one in question is a bit bigger than the other. It's ok, I don't mind having a drake (I have none right now) but I was kinda hoping for three girls.

I would agree with you, while i am new to mallard derived, it makes complete sense, even in my 'scovies my lone ducking from the last hatch i can get a proper quack from her brothers are just on the cusp of gaining there 'scovie drake hiss it's like a teen boys voice crackling lol
