I have a coop that is VERY old. 50+ years. ITs is cleaned out and 20x40 feet.

Has lots of windows and is now all sealed up with hardware wire. IT has 5 of these wire platforms that fold down from the wall. Not sure what those are for.

I need help figuring out the best use of space. I'd like a few breeding pens, brooder pens and a place for chicks hatched from an incubator while they are growing.
Any ideas? I'll post photos soon.

The wire shelves are about 2 feet off the ground. They are VERY sturdy. Any ideas how to place or incorperate breeding pens, a brooding area for new/growing chicks, incubation area, hospital zone???? ect. There is running water from a hand pump in the middle of the room.

Thanks everyone.

THis is a half dome building so it is curved from the midpoint in the ceiling to the ground on the "shelf" side.

I would think you could fashion some sort of cages with solid floors on the wire shelves for sick birds/broodies, etc.

Wow, sounds like a very neat old building - half dome you say? Can't wait to see pics!

Here are the photos. Its dark and rainy here today but should give you some idea with the floor plans and photos. Please remember its a work in progress. I plan to have it finished in about three weeks after we "process" the roosters. I'd really welcome any ideas on how to maximize the space with breeding and brooder pens along with a hospital zone and tweener pen. Thanks.

From the south end of the coop just north of the storage area... didn't think you needed to see that.

Well, the fold out shelves would be awsome to use for putting broody boxes and brood boxes on. When you weren't brooding, you could put the boxes in all that overhead storage space and fold up the shelves. I don't know if you are going to keep the storage space as storage space, but if I were going to have a hospital pen, I would put it behind the wall at the back of what is now the storage area, separating it from the rest. I would incorporate one window into each breeder pen with an exit through the window to an outside run. Size would depend on how many you were planning on keeping in the pens and where you live. Harsh winters require more inside space. With a pump you could set up a gravity watering system, you'd just have to pump the water to fill your reservoir. I would leave access to the sliding door open so you could get that wheelbarrow in and out for major cleaning projects. So, basically, to complete the plans, you need to know how cold it gets, do you need to be able to completely secure the building at night, are you going to be keeping trios of breeders, or what number?

The only other thing is, What about that red building?
