Someone just told me that it's OK to feed layers 1 part barley to 1 part layer ration in the winter, (extreme cold climates) as they need the extra carbs to stay warm and it won't effect the protein levels much because they're eating extra to stay warm....
Thoughts? This would save $$$
Also - they said during the summer (Free range) - they are fed only barley as they get enough nutrients from insects and seeds
Save money? I just paid $22.00 for a bag of Barley. My last bag of layer pellets was $11.50. Now, I realize that I am at a decided disadvantage when comparing my grain prices to the prices in the "grain basket" states. But... I can't imagine there would be any savings to be had from cutting feed with barley.
As for the suggestion that feeding only grain during the summer goes: a lot depends on the type of free range available. Is it a manicured lawn? or is it a combination of pasture, meadow, and wooded areas? The average free range available in the average American neighborhood is a shabby excuse for true free range. A neatly kept yard would in no way provide the bulk of the diet for a flock of birds. It might be a nice supplement. But, I'd want to still be offering a blended feed that provided a well balanced chicken diet.
