Extra Chick - What am I?

I'm new to this but when you receive an extra chick with your order isn't it usually a rooster?
I ordered 15 chicks and received 16. I assumed the extra was a packing peanut roo. Would be nice if it wasn't. I'm not zoned for roos and will have to find a home for him.

I ordered 30 Buff Orpingtons (straight run) and received 31. I also received the free "mystery chick" And in addition, 10 packaging peanuts. I don't think 1 extra is considered a packing peanut. I think it is more like an extra "just in case" and would therefore be the gender or straight run that you ordered. Packing peanuts will be to increase body warmth during shipping and 1 extra body just isn't going to do that. In my case, the 10 packing peanuts ARE all roos. There was a notation on the packing slip indicating that they are Red Star Males added for warmth.

Packing peanuts aren't always roosters, I got 2 extra pullets last fall with a batch from McMurray and they were Australorps.

And yes, there are bantam EEs out there, so it probably is a banty sized one. How cute will that be? I prefer the full-size to the plus-sized ones myself.

Don't just assume, see if you can figure out the gender. Even professional sexers for chicks are only 85-90% accurate, so there are bound to be mistakes, in fact there are plenty of them that show up on here where people got a boy instead of a girl in their order. it happens.
