help!
i’ve noticed that my girl, pumkin is puffing up like a flower(really pushing up her feathers) and opening her mouth. is something wrong?

ps: i’m not very sure if the flock likes me very much :/ they don’t aproch me often. pumkin only fluffs up when i’m petting her in the nesting box. am i stressing no her out? :hmm

What breed is she? She may starting to become broody

Welcome to BYC!
Sounds like maybe broody to me.
How old is she?
Is she laying?
How long per day does she stay in nest....does she stay in there at night too?

she is laying, she’s pretty young she’s only been laying since this christmas, and she seems to always be in the nest unless i put out some chicken scraps :\

Does she growl at you or at other chickens when anyone tries to get near her? If you place an egg near her, does she use her beak to tuck it underneath herself?

It really does sound like you have a broody hen on your hands. Broodies will puff their feathers up and will often make little growling noises when approached in order to warn away anyone from trying to mess with their quest for babies. They will also be constantly sitting in the nesting boxes even if there aren't any eggs to sit on. You might want to check out a few of this site's articles on broodies just so that you can learn the signs better and check for them yourself.

if i place an egg near her she does sorta shift until it is under hers, and she cooes really softly but it seems aggressive? sorry if that doesn’t make Sense, but she seems ticked off

thank you!
