Okay, so my male coturnix has lost a huge patch of feathers on his rump in only two days. There are no other males, so they aren't being plucked by another bird. The feathers are scattered all over his pen floor. He's not plucking them out either. Is he just molting, or is it possible he has a skin condition or mites?

Generally molting is not so extreme, although it can happen with such bald spots. If it were mites, the skin would be really red and irritated looking and it doesn't look like that. So I am going with Creekrocket here and say that other quail have turned on this one and ripped out the feathers. You need to figure out which female did this and isolate or remove them. Keep the ratio proper as well, 1 male to 4 to 7 females.
