I got 2 day old chicks today that either hatched last night or this morning. Well the last hour my little cochin has been peeping very obnoxiously for a few seconds until I enter the room to see what is wrong. If I sit down and watch she makes very silent normal cheeps. But it seems like as soon as I leave she is back to the loud cheeping. She has plenty of food and water and it is exactly 95 degrees in here. I don't understand what is wrong.

Anyone know what this loud extreme chirping is? My mother is in town trying to sleep and she is going nuts. I wrapped the brooder with paper towels so she couldn't see out. She stopped for about 10 min but is back at it.

Is the chick on her own? Mine do it when im putting them out in the run and if I leave one it goes mental and gets really loud! Or with my broody, if one chick gets left behind it does the same :)

No she's got another little baby in there with her, at the moment she is silent:) hoping this doesnt start back up at 3:00! Does anyone no why they make that loud distressed peep?

I'd think either too cold or too hot but they'll usually move towards or away from the heat source to at least give you a clue. Make sure its not hungry or thirsty. With only two, maybe it's a bit insecure not having others around for warmth and body contact. Try rolling a small towel up into a tube shape and place it in the brooder to give them something to lean against.

My chicks liked me to cover their brooder with a towel at night. Of course, you have to leave a portion uncovered for the heat lamp but I covered as much of it as possible with a beach towel and would turn off all extra lights. That seemed to usually quiet them down.

Good luck!

I have two mini silkies, they were so insecure! They were never quiet-well it was just the one making all the noise. I had to go and buy two more little buddies for them and since they have been a four, they are much happier. As mtnlaurl said, try the rolled up towel :)
