Hi,
We have 30 chicks, 5 japanese bantams, and several standards. We just recieved them today from Murray Mcmurray (spelling?) We had to seperate the Japanese bantams from the others. The Japanese bantams are being EXTREMELY loud it's making my ears ring. I have raised chicks about 6 times already & I have never had birds so loud. We put a hot water bottle in with them and a sock with rice thats cool. They keep trying to go under each others feathers and when I hold them cupped in my hand they quiet down but obviously I cant do that ALL the time! Any other ideas/reasons for this? Any way to calm them down? Is it just a Japanese Bantam thing? They are running around, jumping eating & drinking so I have no idea. Would love help!

PS: I've done this a few times ( raising chicks that is) I have a red-heat lamp on them an I gave them gro-gel when they arrived they have food & water and are eating non-stop & pooping normally, temperatures 95 degrees! Any other suggestions?

exactly, i'm way confused. . they aren't even going under the heat lamp which is at 95 degrees. They are running around and hanging out like any other chicks we've raised. They are just REALLY loud.

Get a real feather duster and place it so they can go under "mom." Make sure they know where to water and food are. I sprinkle some food over the paper towels until they ALL realize its food. These little bantams may be more sensitive. I'd triple check the temperature and make sure no drafts. Good luck!!

Are they pooping OK? No pasty butts? (edited to add)

Yup, thats what we did with the food. Yup all pooping normally, checked all for pasty butt.

Great idea re: feather duster

I have a couple of small soft teddy bears I picked up at the dollar store. I put these in the brooder face down, this leaves a space underneath that the chicks love to snuggle in. This also helps if they are picking on one another.

Edit to say: The Teddy Bears are a lot easier to clean poop off of than dusters. I just throw them in the washer and dryer or go buy another one for a buck.
