This is a rescue hen. She is a Brahma, renamed Earnestine. She was found wild in the woods. Had been there for weeks and was a nuisance to the neighbors, so she was bought to me. She’s got what looks like a very resistant eye infection with drainage. I’ve treated and cleaned the eye every day for a month now and it used to be mucus like, now it’s more watery but she has drainage which is evident in the white area below her eye. She can see fine with the eye. I have been treating with Terramycin and at one point also with antimicrobial ophthalmic gel by veyericyn. This hen is also being treated for candida vent glee hence the white meds ( clotrimazole) in her beak on the picture. I have also given her eye supplements, super tonic vitamin B12 ( for recovery) and eye vitamins that contain beta carotene and phytonutrients and also poultry cell administered one times a day. Besides the two issues, her weight is good, appetite is good. She seems very happy and content in quarantine with some other hens that are also in quarantine for vent glee.

Any suggestions on what is going on with her eye? For the vent glee, I am going to order some acidified copper sulfate to put in the water. I might add that the hens have also been getting fermented food and yogurt to help with the vent glee. Clotrimazole administered both ways, vent and beak.I have had Earnestine for a month now. She received 8 doses of meds so far.

My main concern is the eye. It’s got me baffled. I have never seen this type of drainage which seems to be staining underneath the eye. I been treating underneath the eye with terramycin as well. I have included two pictures. The other eye is fine. It’s just for comparison.

Her eye could be a sign of a respiratory disease, such as mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) or she might have been pecked. Flush the eye twice a day, using a warmer compress for a few minutes to soften any crusty drainage or gunk. Then apply the Terramycin or Neosporin twice a day into the eye. Tylosin powder put into the water 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days is a good treatment for MG. Here is where to buy Tylosin:

Keep her separated from other chickens until she is back to normal or for 30 days to quarantine.
