Not sure what is going on with this hen. She has definitely lost weight. We have separated her from the others. They have a basic coop and run with straw bedding. It doesn't look like any of the others have eye problems.
Any ideas?
Dont know what it is but if you can get some one to help hold the chook a got something similar and it comes out like it covered the eye area - under the lids too. Looks like 1/2 a pea. Its gross if your squeamish. I lifted it with a sharp object near the corner so you dont hurt the eye - she will buck around. Once I get an edge it will massage out it is soft and squishy but a tissue or something absorbent will help hold it.
I would start some warm wet soaks to the eye (keep everything as clean or sterile as possible) while holding her in your lap for 10 minutes or more. Get some Terramycin eye ointment from the feed store and apply to the eye. The second time, try to remove the opaque covering with a QTip or tweezers (very gently.) This looks like a plaque from an infected eye that has hardened and dried. It really needs to be removed to see if the eye is still healthy, and may take some times. Sometimes, respiratory infections can cause this, and other times it can be infection from debris in the eye or peck wounds.
