Eye infection, yellow mass?

Hi everyone,

I've got a 3 month old Copper Maran's pullet that came down with an eye infection while we were on vacation. I've been out for 3.5weeks and my husband did not notice this while I was away, so I'm not sure how long she's had it.

Her eye is very round, swollen and draining clear pus.

Not sure what to do. She's eating and drinking, her poop is normal. Her weight is normal.

Backstory: I purchased 6 pullets in April and went back early June for some polish hens. The polish came down with some respiratory issues last month. I quarantined and I gave the polish Tylan50 2x/5 days. 2 died during treatment.

She's not sounding gurgly, her throat is clear as well. No pox that I can see, no yellow inside her beak or throat.

I gently pushed on the side of her eye and it's pretty rock hard. I feel so terrible for her

I started her on ABX this morning. Doing Tylan50 /.5ml / 2x daily / 5 days.

Do I need to cull her or go to a vet?? I would love to avoid having to see a vet but I don't know if I can fix this one. I can't get an abx for the other chickens water without an RX, so I can either vax them all or go to the vet I suppose.

Any advice would be great. Thank you!

I have had that to happen, tylan and time healed it. I did have one rooster that lost that eye, but I had a delay in getting him on the tylan. The other few healed fine. I am not going to take a chicken to the vet so no problem there.

I did take 3 for a necropsy because I had about 1000 more at the time and they started dying----that's the only time I seen a Vet.

Thanks PD. She seems calm and has continued to eat and drink. I'm not going to mess with the eye and just let Tylan do its thing.

Poor girl.

Did your rooster that healed up have a large swelling mass like mine? Did it eventually go down?
I may have been over-researching this, but I'm hoping I don't have to perform any operations on this gal.

It looks like the eye is full of puss....I'm thinking it would be good to get some of it out.

i would like to get it out I'm just not sure how to do it?

I don't know if this is pus or her eye. It's really hard and doesn't budge when I try to push on it.

He got back to normal and acted fine. Had no effect on him other than a blind side.

I did work the area around the eye's to get some of the puss out--His eye as well as a few others swole up pretty good size.

The eye looks typical of either mycoplasma (MG) or coryza, both respiratory infections. Both are carried into a flock by an exposed chicken, and the flock members may always be carriers.
The pus in the eye needs to be removed for the medication to help. Is there a bad odor near the face? Squeezing, flushing with saline eye drops, cleaning the goop out with QTips, tweezers, or even a manicure tool are ways to get the eye clean. Your vet may prescribe powerful eye drops, but if not vet is available, Terramycin eye ointment from the feedstore, used twice a day into a cleaned out eye may help. Ciprofloxacin eye drops are available online, and would be better. Tylan 50 injectable 0.2 ml per pound twice a day for 5 days is a good treatment for MG. Give it orally without a needle, but 18-20 gauge needles and 3 cc syringes are needed to remove the medicine from the vial. Here is a very good thread on removing the gunk:

Welcome to BYC! You need to remove the pus. Tylan alone will not treat the pus.
