One of our 7 week old araucanas started coughing, sneezing, had runny nose and inflamed eye and produced weird noise while peeping. She sat with closed eyes, did not run away from us like always. I separated her, gave her eye drops against infection, but it got worse. I decided to cull her before she infects the flock :(. Day later, another one had infected eye, but no other symptoms. I separated her, gave her eye drops one afternoon and next morning she was much better, no puss coming out, redness gone, she did not scratch her eye lid anymore. When can I return her back to the flock? She seems totally fine, but I still keep dropping her meds into the eye. I give all of them vitamins in the water now, linen seeds and some fish oil. Is it enough symptoms to say it might have been mycoplasma? All other 28 chickens are ok. Thank you.

Without testing, it is hard to define what the problem is. If the bird has been fine for 24+ hours, I would return it to the flock.
Thank you. I did return her to the flock, she didn't like the isolation, but otherwise she is totally fine. Another araucana had a bit sick eye, I applied the drops and she seems okay. Today another araucana seemed to me to have "blurred voice", hey eyes are okay. Are the araucanas more succeptible to eye infections and cold? We have 30 birds, 8 of them araucanas and it is only them who have these problems for now.

Respiratory diseases in chickens are contagious, and if one has them, most all are carriers even if they don’t show symptoms. Is the eye swollen or have pus, or is there foam/bubbles in the eye? A picture may help. If there is pus or gunk in the eye, that should be removed and the eye flushed, for the antibiotic eye drops to help. What type of drops are you using? Where are you located?
