A few weeks ago ( 2-3 ) I acquired a few chicks, all with different injuries. One had a NASTY wry neck, one had SEVERE pasty butt, and the another had a swollen eye.
Over the past week or so I have really started to study this particular chick, as the others have all healed up. All aside from one who still has some pasty butt now and then.
So, the chick with the messed up eye has seemingly worsened. Appetite is normal, poop is normal, water intake... normal. The only thing wrong with her is this:
In these pictures I had just trimmed away what appeared to be ingrown fluff away from the eye. She had down curling into the top part of her eye, much like what causes cherry eyes in dogs. Top and bottom. Trimmed those away and pulled out some down that was stuck inside of the eye itself. Immediately upon doing so she opened her eye for ( what I'm assuming ) was the first time since I brought her home. The eye itself doesn't look dead, but it's definitely not normal on the inside.
If you've ever seen inside the eye of someone, or something, that is blind you know what I'm about to say. - The eye was blue. It's blind, it's useless. I've been applying opthical eye ointments from the beginning. But, it's staying at this size. The eye is solid, no sign of fluid anywhere but inside of the eyeball itself. It wouldn't be so bad to remove it, I have the tools to carterize ( spelling fail ) and sew the eyelids shut. But, I would like a second opinion before I do so. Should I give it a chance now that the ingrown down has been removed to return to a normal state? Or is the eye, in your opinion, beyond help?
Using this diagram - The eyelashes and surrounding down were ingrown into the eye itself. The cornea is scarred beyond repair. The parts behind the cornea are blue with scar tissue, and the round part of the eye itself is what's swollen.
